Recently, we asked our Facebook community a simple question: are you ready to send the kids back to school, or do you wish you had more time? 🍎 Local mom Nancy A answered with something so good we had to turn it into its own post. She didn't just tell us her family's start date, she walked us through an entire three-week system for easing back into the school-year grind, tears and all. 😅 |
The First Monday in August: Reset DayNancy's household doesn't wait until the week before school starts. Every year, the reset begins on the first Monday in August — giving everyone about three weeks of runway before the first bell rings. The goal isn't just a schedule change. It's giving both her and her child time to get emotionally and mentally ready, not just logistically ready. 💛 |
Sleep Shifts in Small StepsInstead of forcing an earlier bedtime overnight, Nancy moves wake-up and bedtime by just 15–30 minutes at a time. It's a slow nudge instead of a shock to the system and by the time the first day of school arrives, the new rhythm already feels normal. |
A Mini "Home School" for 23 DaysHere's the part that really stood out: for those 23 days leading up to school, Nancy runs a mini home-school routine. Each day includes short blocks about 15–25 minutes apiece of math, English, science, and art. It's not about covering curriculum. It's about rebuilding the muscle of sitting down, focusing, and switching between subjects, so none of it feels foreign on day one. |
Expect the Tears — They're Part of the ProcessNancy is refreshingly honest about week one: it's rough, with tears on both ends. But by week two, things are mostly smoothed out, and by week three, mornings come easily for everyone, right on time for the first day of school. Normalizing that rocky start, instead of expecting a perfect transition, might be the most useful takeaway of all. |

Huge thanks to Nancy A for sharing her family's approach with our community! 👌 If you're starting your own reset this week, you're right on time. What does your family's back-to-school reset look like? Slow and steady, or full send the night before? Share it with me, we love collecting real tips from real Centreville & South Riding families. 👀 |
